Preparing for a boom in summer staycations

With the country opening back up after and people itching to travel after a long year and a half of isolation, we can expect to see a boom in so-called “staycations” this summer.

Since many countries outside the US still feel weary toward accepting foreign visitors, many people with the travel bug will need to make do vacations that are closer to home. Already, this combination of factors led to a surge in demand for staycation accommodations.

What we can expect: staycations by the numbers

Although we’re in a much different position compared to where we were last summer, we’re still expecting to see a lot more staycations in the summer of 2021 compared to 2019. So, what can we expect to see? Let’s take a look at some of the statistics:

  • Last year, 26% of adults say they took a staycation during the COVID pandemic.
  • Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky says the company will need millions more hosts to accommodate current demand.
  • Millennials drove demand for staycations before the pandemic hit and tend to increase their spending while on staycation. Many seek a ‘digital detox’ on these staycations.
  • Although travel confidence is growing, many industry experts expect the staycation boom to carry over into 2022.

Foodservice Preparations

Although life is settling into a new normal with COVID cases dropping, some restaurants are electing to not fully re-open right away. But the warmer temperatures of summer will provide more opportunities for outdoor seating and social distancing, which will likely remain a part of dining out for the foreseeable future.

Although we can’t predict a complete return to normal for customers and restaurants, we can make sure you have the everyday solutions you need to meet the foodservice challenges you face today.

To keep your team and customer safe this summer, consider looking into the signage, sanitation equipment, and food safety labeling we offer. Even as the pandemic subsides, these simple tools will likely remain crucial to helping your customers enjoy their dining experience with you.
